Emergency workers have been called to Water Street in the Liverpool area after a car ran into pedestrians during Liverpool FC’s trophy parade.

A 53-year-old man has been arrested by Merseyside Police in connection with the incident though it is not clear if he was the driver of the car.

Supporters had gathered in Liverpool on Monday to celebrate their 20th English Premier League title.

But just after 6:00pm local time, a car is said to have run into the crowd at Dale Street towards Water Street, injuring many.

The incident is said to have happened towards the end of the trophy parade.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by this serious incident,” a spokesperson of the club is quoted as saying.

“We will continue to offer our full support to the emergency services and local authorities who are dealing with this incident.”

UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has described the incident as “appalling”.

Merseysiders Everton have expressed sympathies with Liverpool FC, saying: “our thoughts are with all those who have been affected by this serious incident in our city”.

The Premier League also noted that “everyone at the Premier League is shocked by the appalling events in Liverpool this evening, and our heartfelt thoughts go out to all those injured and affected”.

“We have been in contact with Liverpool FC and have offered our full support following this serious incident.”
