The Vice President of IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil, has suggested that the recommendations of the Constitution Review Committee should be sent to Parliament for debate and approval.
According to him, the current process where the government has chosen some of the recommendations and left out others, is not proper.
“The recommendations must be sent to Parliament. They have the mandate to amend the Constitution. Parliament is made up of the people’s representative and can decide what the people want,’ he said on The KeyPoints on September 12.
He was contributing to discussions on the recommendations of the Constitution Review Committee and the decision by the Government to set up an implementation committee.
According to him, what the Government’s Constitution Implementation Committee is about to do is the job of Parliament.
The Constitution Review Committee made a number of recommendations, including the review of the powers of the Attorney-General. It wants some taken away and given to an Ethics Commission to handle cases of corruption.
This, in the view of the committee, is to give the A-G free hands to do international arbitration and big constitutional cases.
Presenting the final report to President John Dramani Mahama on Monday, December 22, Chair of the Committee Prof H Kwasi Prempeh said that “ORAL will be done by some other body. We want to take some of the powers of the A-G and give them to an Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission.”
The Committee also recommended the extension of the presidential tenure from four to five years among others.
