Solomon Owusu, a leading member of the Movement for Change and former member of the NPP, has disclosed his intention to petition the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to investigate the funding source for over 300 Nissan Navara pickup vehicles donated to the NPP by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Owusu says that Dr. Bawumia, the NPP’s 2024 flag bearer and former Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) and Vice President, publicly disclosed procuring those vehicles for the party.
According to Owusu, the former Vice President’s salary, combined with his earnings from the Bank of Ghana, would not have been sufficient to purchase those vehicles, even if he had saved his entire income while in government and at the BoG.
His comment follows a CDD-Ghana report highlighting a sharp rise in the cost of political campaigning in Ghana.

On TV3’s NewDay morning show, during the BigIssue segment on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, Mr. Owusu questioned the source of funds for the donated vehicles, doubting that the former Vice President could have funded them solely from his salary.
“In recent days, we’ve heard the former flag bearer of the NPP, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, graciously give us information that, he, single-handedly, donated more than 300 brand new Navara pickups to the New Patriotic Party.
“For me, it’s an enough information that all of us know the salary of a Vice President and we know that if you decided not to even take a cedi from his salary, for the entire 8 years, and even the period that he was working at the Bank of Ghana, he could not afford the 300+ Navara pickups from his own pocket.
“On the average, a brand new Navara plus duty will not cost less than 60,000.00. If you take it that it’s 60,000.00, and using the base figure of 300, it means he donated US$18 million to the NPP campaign,” he explained.
He added that he was going to petition the OSP right after the show, to help uncover the source of the funding for the procurement of those vehicles.
“Was it a case that this money came from his pocket? Was it a case that he was helped by friends or his network as we’ve been told? And as to whether or not these were not aided by foreigners who are not supposed to take part in our body politics in terms of funding. There are no answers. So, to help deepen our democracy, this morning, when I leave this place by 10:30, I’m submitting a petition to the Office of the Special Prosecutor to help us in this regard, that we go in to find out who and who helped him to, as it were, donate 300+ Navara pick-ups,” he stated.
