Drivers and commuters using the Asawinso to Bekwai stretch in the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai municipality of the Western North region are calling on authorities to urgently fix the road.
The road, they say, has seen no maintenance after 25 years of construction.
According to road users, the stretch has deteriorated significantly over time, making transportation difficult and increasing the risk of accidents.
Drivers who ply the route say the situation has worsened in recent months, with deep potholes, dusty surfaces, and poor drainage slowing down movement and damaging vehicles.
They lament that the road, which serves as a major link between other districts and market centres, is negatively affecting economic activities in the area.
Some commercial drivers say they are forced to spend more on frequent repairs due to the poor condition of the road, while others indicate that passengers often complain about the discomfort.
“Every part of the road is bad. From Beposo to Bekwai, it is all potholes. If care is not taken, you can easily run into someone. There should also be streetlights so the road is clearer at night. Sometimes the potholes are not visible. The road is almost completely destroyed. Bibiani has a major hospital, and if you have to transport a pregnant woman from here, she may not survive the journey. We are appealing to the authorities to fix the road for us.”
Residents and traders share similar concerns, noting that the bad road is affecting the transportation of foodstuffs to nearby towns and markets, leading to increased transport fares.
“It is quite difficult using this road. Sometimes I think the youth may have to take action for the government to realise how bad it is. Asawinso to Bekwai is a very short distance it should take about 10 minutes, but because of the road, it takes up to 30 minutes. The government has to step in and do something.”
The drivers are therefore appealing to the government, the Ministry of Roads and Highways, and the Municipal Assembly to prioritise the rehabilitation of the stretch to ease movement and improve livelihoods.
