The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has sent heartfelt condolences to Ghana Premier League club Berekum Chelsea following an armed robbery attack on Sunday night.

The club bus came under attack at Ahyiresu on the Bibiani-Goaso road while returning from a 1-0 defeat to FC Samartex in Samreboi.

One player, Dominic Frimpong, who is said to have sustained gunshot wounds, was pronounced dead at a nearby health facility.

In a statement issued on Monday, April 13, the GFA described the incident as tragic, commiserating with the bereaved family, the club and the entire football fraternity.

“Dominic Frimpong reportedly lost his life following an armed robbery attack on the team while the club was returning from a Ghana Premier League fixture,the nation’s football-governing body observed.

“The incident has sent shockwaves across the entire football fraternity.

“The GFA extends its heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, his teammates, technical staff, management, and all at Berekum Chelsea during this extremely difficult time.”

It later noted that the tragic incident is not only a huge loss to Berekum Chelsea but also to Ghana football as a whole.

The GFA disclosed that it is in constant communication with the club and relevant authorities, including the Ghana Police Service, for thorough investigations into the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident.

“We urge that all necessary measures be taken to ensure justice is served.”

It also announced that it will engage key stakeholders to review and strengthen security arrangements for clubs traveling for domestic competitions to prevent such tragic occurrences in the future.

“We call on the entire football community to unite in support of Berekum Chelsea and the bereaved family in this moment of grief.”
