Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe, the Director of Legal Affairs for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has claimed that the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, doesn’t understand the laws that governs her activities as an EC Chair.

He says the mop up exercise proposed by the EC to capture persons who cannot access centres in the ongoing limited voter registration, together with a continuous registration it will embark on shows how misinformed she is when it comes to the laws governing the Commission.

The EC Chairperson in a press conference in Accra Monday, September 18, 2023, updated the media on the progress of the ongoing voter registration exercise.

Speaking on TV3’s Ghana Tonight Monday, September 18, 2023, the NDC’s Director of Legal Affairs said the EC’s decision to organize a mop up is an admission that the current process will disenfranchise many voters. He also said the mass registration of voters to ensure everyone of eligible age is captured on the roll as proposed by the EC is not in the constitution.

“From her own statement, she admits that by limiting the registration to the districts, some people will definitely be disenfranchised. And that’s why she quickly now says that there will be a mop up exercise,” he said.

“The law doesn’t recognize anything like mass registration or whatsoever. The Law is clear,” said Mr. Tamakloe.

He also accused Jean Mensa of not complying with the laws of the land in discharging her duties.

“The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission has this regrettable notion that she is the lord of lords, the queen of queens. What she had forgotten is that her conduct is subject to the Rule of Law,” he emphasised
