Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, a founding member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), has asked senior citizens and other Statesmen in the country, to speak about the ongoing fracas between the Electoral Commission (EC) and the opposition NDC.

His concern, particularly, lies with the treatment meted out to some demonstrators who participated in the party’s Tuesday protest in the Ashanti Regional capital, Kumasi, by the police.

During the September 17, 2024 demonstration by the NDC to present a petition demanding the EC to conduct a forensic audit into the voters’ register, some persons, according to the leadership of the party in the region, were injured by the police, adding that there was a gunshot in the process.

Although the police denied the claims of gunshot during the protest, the NDC Ashanti Regional Secretary, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, in a statement signed Wednesday, September 18, rejected the police account on the shooting incident.

The protest, dubbed; ‘Enough is Enough’, which was carried nationwide by the party, was to register its displeasure with the Commission’s refusal to conduct a forensic audit of the electoral roll, which the NDC says has been characterised by some anomalies, including the illegal transfer of voters which were detected during the exhibition process.

Reacting to the fallout from the demonstration and the impasse between the EC and the NDC, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe expressed disappointment with those who matter in the country but have remained silent on the development.

He said on Ghana Tonight on TV3 Wednesday, September 18, 2024, that if care is not taken for the matter to be resolved, it could degenerate into something else.

“But it is unfortunate that as I speak now, we have elders in this country, senior Statesmen, both in my party the NPP and other political parties and nobody is saying a word.

“We have also other respected elders in this country, they are all quiet. When we get to that deadly level, I think that is the time that they will realise that it was necessary for them to have said something earlier,” he stated.

His comment was in reaction to the alleged shooting incident in Kumasi on which he said “the police cannot suppress the masses.”
