National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has said the ECG’s attribution of Wednesday’s power outage to rainstorm was a lie told to cover another lie made by the President.

According to him, the President’s claim at the May Day event that load-shedding which is also known as ‘dumsor’ has been solved and wouldn’t return was a lie.

To protect the President, Sammy Gyamfi says the dumsor that occurred the very day the President said the problem was over, was attributed to rainstorm to justify the statement he made.

On Wednesday May 01, 2024, the President noted in his speech that the intermittent power outages that have bedeviled the citizenry, dated back to last quarter of 2023, has been solved and would not return.

“I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Ghanaians for their patience and understanding during the recent temporary challenges with electricity supply across the country. Over the period, the issues surrounding transformers and gas supply have been successfully resolved resulting in sufficient improvement in power supply reliability.

“Indeed, over the past few days, we have witnessed stable electricity supply across the country with no load-shedding reported anywhere yesterday (Tuesday, April 30). For the past seven years we have worked tirelessly to keep the lights on and I am confident that the unfortunate era of dumsor will not return,” he stated.

Meanwhile, there was dumsor that very day the President made the statement. In its explanation, the Electricity Company of Ghana released a statement explaining that the outage on Wednesday was caused by rainstorm.

“ECG and the Ghana Fire Service are working together to drain all flooded primary substations to ensure a swift restoration of power supply.

“We wish to assure our cherished customers and all stakeholders of our commitment to ensuring a stable power supply, and apologise unreservedly for the effect of the outage on our daily lives,” the statement indicated.

But speaking on the KeyPoints on TV3 Saturday, May 04, 2024, Sammy Gyamfi noted that the ECG’s statement was a lie to justify the President’s lie since since checks by a sister media house disclosed that there were no floods at the places mentioned.

“The day after he (President Akufo-Addo) spoke, ECG issued a statement indicating that there [was] dumsor. But the excuse was that it was because of a rainstorm. That was a reason for the dumsor. Joy FM actually went to those sites, those stations of ECG, there was no flooding there. Nothing. I have the video on my phone, no flooding. So, they lied, just to justify the lie which was told by the President,” he said.
