The Ministry of Education has launched an investigation following a widely circulated social media post alleging that placement into Aburi Girls’ Senior High School (ABUGISS) costs GHC15,000.
The post, attributed to one Gertrude Adzo Borklo, claims that admission into the prestigious school can be bought.
According to the Ministry, this “feeds into a conspiratorial narrative designed to create the false impression that the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) Computerized School Placement System is for sale.”
“The Ministry views this allegation with the utmost seriousness and has initiated an immediate investigation,” said Dr. Clement Abas Apaak, Deputy Minister for Education. “We are committed to ensuring that the integrity of the school placement process remains intact.”
Efforts to contact the author of the post have so far been unsuccessful, as her account was deactivated shortly after publication. The Ministry further notes that “other individuals, hiding behind anonymous or ghost accounts, are actively spreading similar falsehoods.”
In response, the Ministry is working in close collaboration with the National Security Secretariat, the Cyber Security Authority, and other relevant agencies to identify and track down those behind these claims.
Dr. Apaak emphasized, “We wish to state categorically that the BECE Computerized School Placement System is entirely free of charge. At no point is payment required to access this service.”
He added, “We are urging the public to assist by reporting any individuals—whether officials of the Ministry or third parties—who solicit money in exchange for placement. Anyone found culpable will face swift and decisive action.”
The Ministry has set up dedicated hotlines for the public to report such incidents:
• 📞 054 154 8223 (Calls)
• 💬 024 490 8957 (WhatsApp)
“Together,” Dr. Apaak concluded, “we can safeguard the integrity and transparency of Ghana’s school placement system and weed out unscrupulous persons who seek to profit from this vital national exercise.”
