The Minister of Energy, Dr. John Jinapor, has officially inaugurated the Board of Nuclear Power Ghana (NPG), tasking its members to aggressively pursue and deliver on the nation’s long-standing objective of integrating nuclear power into the national energy mix.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Dr. Jinapor stated he was acting “on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama,” underscoring the high-level commitment to the project.
Ghana’s nuclear ambition dates back to the days of its first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. However, as Dr. Jinapor noted, “despite decades of effort, this vision has not fully materialised.” The Minister stressed the urgency of the task, highlighting that sustained economic growth globally is dependent on access to stable and affordable base-load energy, for which nuclear power remains one of the most reliable pathways.
He delivered a clear mandate to the new board: “I have charged the Board to break new ground, accelerate progress, and deliver on the long-standing objective of adding nuclear power to our national energy mix.”

The newly constituted six-member Board is led by Chairman Emmanuel Appiah-Korang. Other distinguished members appointed to steer the country’s nuclear energy development are:
• Emmanuel Appiah-Korang (Chairman)
• Ing. Samuel Boakye Dampare
• Ing. Edward Obeng-Kenzo
• Bernard Kofi Ellis
• Benedict Kofi Wompeh
• Nana Akyaa Amoah-Amissah
The inauguration marks a crucial step in the roadmap toward establishing Ghana’s first nuclear power plant, aimed at securing the country’s energy independence and providing a clean, reliable source of power for future industrialization and growth.
