President John Mahama has urged members of the Constitutional Review Committee to endeavour to consult all Ghanaians in the course of reviewing the 1992 Constitution.
According to the President, this is necessary because reviewing the Constitution is about Ghana.
“It is about ensuring that our constitution reflects the values, hopes and dreams of every Ghanaian regardless of their affiliations. I urge you to engage widely with citizens from all walks of life in this process. This constitution must belong to all of us, it must inspire trust, it must unite us and must provide the framework for a more just, inclusive and prosperous Ghana,” President Mahama said when he swore members of the Committee into office on January 30 at the seat of government.
President Mahama noted that, “This should mark a point where Ghana moves from discussion to action. I assure you that your work will not be in vain. This should not be an exercise in futility. We are determined to see this process through.”
He expressed confidence in the ability of the members to deliver the task at hand.
“I have every confidence in your ability to deliver results that will serve both present and future generation of Ghanaians. I take pride in the composition of this committee. You have not been chosen out of political consideration but for your integrity, expertise and commitment to Ghana’s progress. You are not just reviewing reports and proposing amendments. You are helping to shape the future of our dear nation Ghana. Your diverse perspectives will enrich the process,” the President stressed.
He thanked them for taking up this national duty, especially at short notice.
“Your willingness to serve is a testament of your love of country and dedication to Ghana’s future,” he said.
The Chairman of the Constitutional Review Committee, Professor H Kwasi Prempeh assured the President that they will work with equal sincerity with the sole aim of bettering the fortunes of Ghanaians.
Speaking on behalf of the committee members, Professor Prempeh said “For the next six months…we also pledge that we will return the trust with equal sincerity and seriousness.”
