President John Dramani Mahama has announced the full restoration of electricity generation at the Akosombo Hydroelectric Dam following recent disruptions caused by a fire at the Volta River Authority switchyard control room.
Speaking at the 2026 May Day celebrations held at Jackson Park in Koforidua on Friday, May 1, the President said the facility is now fully operational after engineers successfully restored six turbines.
He disclosed that he had visited the power enclave a day earlier to assess the extent of damage caused by the fire, which triggered widespread concern over electricity supply.
Despite the setback, President Mahama said engineers from the Volta River Authority and the Ghana Grid Company collaborated effectively to restore operations within a short period.
“I know many of you are concerned about the disruptions to the electricity supply caused by the Akosombo fire, but I want to share the good news that the GRIDCo and VRA engineers working together have been able to bypass the damaged control system and restart all six turbines at the Akosombo Generating Station,” he stated.
According to the President, all six turbines were successfully brought back online as of Thursday night, restoring the dam’s full power generation capacity.
He commended the engineers for their swift and professional response, describing their efforts as a clear demonstration of the resilience and capability of Ghanaian workers.
“These engineers are a living testament to the fact that Ghanaian workers are the nation’s most valuable assets,” he added.
The restoration is expected to stabilise electricity supply across the country following days of intermittent outages linked to the incident.
