The Executive Director of the Africa Education Watch, Kofi Asare, has reiterated his call for the establishment of police posts in every public secondary school across the country.

This follows rising concerns over the safety and security of students and teachers in the country.

Speaking on 3FM Sunrise with Helen Appiah-Ampofo on July 28, Mr. Asare stated firmly: “I will continue to advocate for a police post in every secondary school. With about 1,000 schools nationwide, if we recruit 4,000 policemen, every school can have two officers on 24-hour guard duties in shifts.”

His comments come on the heels of two students of Nalerigu Senior High School in the North East Region being reportedly shot and killed by unknown assailants on the school’s premises on the night of Saturday, July 26.

While the exact circumstances surrounding the attack remain unclear, local sources have suggested a possible link to the ongoing Bawku tribal conflict. However, this connection has not yet been confirmed by security authorities. The incident has sparked fear and panic among students and residents of the Nalerigu community, with many said to be stranded and concerned for their safety.

Also, Bawku Senior High School has been temporarily closed by the Municipal Education Directorate following the fatal shooting of a third-year student, Hakim Kundima, on the school’s campus.

Mr. Asare criticised what he described as government inaction, suggesting authorities often wait until tragic events occur before responding.

“We can also pretend there is no money until many more have been killed,” he said, calling for proactive investments in education safety.”

Richard Sumah, a lead member of the Movement for Change, has also called on the government to establish a permanent military garrison in Bawku, as part of efforts to restore peace and stability to the conflict-ridden municipality in the Upper East Region.

“I’ll expect the government to establish a garrison in Bawku. Anybody whose actions or inactions will compromise the safety and security of the country is an enemy of the state,” Mr. Sumah asserted.
