The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) will soon commence replacement and upgrade of transformers across eight substations in the capital.

The exercise, which will begin on Wednesday, April 8 and run until Friday, April 10 covers twelve transformers across substations in Adenta, La, Teshie-Nungua, Nmai-Dzor, Baatsonaa, and Lashibi.

Each unit is being upgraded from 20 megavolts ampere to 30 megavolts ampere.

ECG says the investment will significantly strengthen the city’s power grid for the next thirty years, assuring customers that frequent power outages and transformer overload will now be a thing of the past mainly in Accra.

General Manager of External Communications for ECG, Charles Nii Ayiku Ayiku, said the upgrade will put an end to frequent power outages and ensure reliable power supply.

“We are upgrading from 20-26 MVA to 30-39 MVA which is a very huge upgrade. So, our customers should expect better reliable power and the frequent outages and transformer overload should be a thing of the past. This is the first phase, we will also move to other substations where this exercise is taking place,” he addressed the media during a tour of the substations on Tuesday, April 7, 2026.

ECG apologised for any inconvenience that will be caused during the period of the exercise.

“Of course, there are going to be some outages due to this exercise. We apologize for the inconvenience but we hope that after this exercise, our customers will enjoy very reliable power and our systems will also be well- strengthened to take more of our customers,” he stated.

Francis Kofi Atsyatsya, General Manager, Sub-Transmission, Accra noted that during the exercise, ECG has outlined four groups with each customer expected to experience six hours of outage within the period of this work.

“We are upgrading from 20 megavolts ampere to 30 megavolts ampere just to increase capacity at the substation, to increase reliability, to improve efficiency such that customers within the enclave will enjoy reliable supply, very good voltage and also prepare to get new customers connected to the substation.

“We earmarked 8 substations for this project. We started from Denu that one was completed about 2 months ago. We are currently here, from here we go to Lashibi and we have a substation behind trade fair, we will do that also, upgrade that of Adenta, within Teshie-Nungua enclave, we will do that one also and another at Spintex. When we are done with Accra-Tema, we will move to Kumasi,” he added.
