Four pre-tertiary teacher unions have petitioned the Ghana Education Service (GES) over the reopening and reporting dates for Senior High Schools (SHSs).

The unions say the duration between the vacation and reopening is too short to allow both students and staff, including non-teaching, enough time to take rest.

They have also stated that the timeframe between the release of school placements for first year students and the reporting date, which is less than a week interval, should be relooked since many students who are now doing self placement will be disadvantaged.

The Unions which include TEWU, GNAT, NAGRAT and the CCT-GH, want the GES to reconsider the reporting date of 1st December for the students who would be required to return home for a break in less than 3 weeks.

Find below the statement signed by the teacher unions.

We the Pre-Tertiary Teacher Unions in Ghana Education Service (GES), have noted with concern some challenges with the reopening and reporting dates of students and staff to Senior High Schools.

Placement of first year students into Senior High Schools was done on the 280 of November 2023, and the process is still ongoing.

The announced date for the reporting of first year students which is slated for 4th December 2023, appears not practicable due to the fact that, the placement and the reopening dates are too close.

In addition, asking form one students to report on the 4th of December 2023, only for them to go home again on the 21″ December 2023, for Christmas break will put an undue burden on students, staff and parents.

The vacation which spans from the 21″ of December 2023, to the 2d of january 2024, is too limited a time to offer members of staff (both Teaching and non Teaching) any meaningful rest.

We hereby call on the Management of the GES, to reconsider all these situations and effect changes to the dates. Counting on you for your swift response.
