Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin is Speaker of Ghana's 8th Parliament
The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Bagbin, has expressed shock over the death of eight persons in the helicopter crash that occurred on August 6.
This is contained in a post he made on Facebook.
“The news of the helicopter crash that claimed the precious lives of Honourables Dr Omane Boamah, Dr. Murtala Mohammed, Samuel Sarpong, and Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, alongside career officers Aboagye, Addo, Ampadu, Anala and Mensah has left me with unfathomable pain. I am in ruthless pain and our nation is in shock and distraught,” the Speaker wrote.
“Without doubt, our fallen heroes demonstrated commitment to building our nation and had much more to offer and live for. It is unfortunate that we lost them to the cold hands of death at this time,” he added.
Speaker Bagbin expressed his deepest condolences “to the immediate families of our fallen compatriots, President John Dramani Mahama and the government, as well as all their friends who have been hit by their sudden death. Their untimely passing leaves a void that can never be filled, but their legacies will continue to inspire generations to come.”
Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama has suspended all his scheduled activities and programmes for the rest of the week.
This was disclosed by the Minister in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu in a statement issued on August 6.
He said this development follows “Wednesday’s national tragedy involving eight persons who died in a helicopter crash.”
“There will be three days of national mourning starting tomorrow, Thursday, 7 August 2025. The government, through the Chief of Staff, has meanwhile directed that all flags must fly at half-mast until further notice,” Mr Ofosu added.
At an emergency press briefing at the Presidency, Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah announced the death of these individuals and confirmed the incident.
The officials together with the crew members were en route to Obuasi in the Ashanti Region for a national event.
“The President and the government extend our condolences and sympathies to the families of our Comrades and the service men who died in service to the country,” Chief of Staff announced.
