The National Communication Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has submited a right to information requests to the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) against, the Forestry Commission, Attorney General’s Department and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources in respect of the activities of Heritage Imperial limited in the Apamprama Forest reserve.

Sammy Gyamfi is seeking amongst others a copy of the prospecting license granted to Heritage Imperial Company Limited in respect of the Apamprama Forest reserve dated October 25, 2018. .

He is also requesting a copy of a letter revoking the said prospecting license dated on or about January 11, 2019 and any other relevant report or document that relates to the activities of Heritage Imperial Company Limited in the Apamprama Forest reserve in the Ashanti region.

This request has become imperative in light of a legal opinion from the Atorney-General and Ministry of Justice to the Ghana Police Service dated September 12, 2023.

The said legal opinion suggested that no evidence has been found by the State in support of allegations by the former Minister of Environment and Chairman of the dissolved Inter-Ministerial Commitee against Ilegal Mining (IMCIM), Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng to the effect that Heritage Imperial Company Limited has been mining and or operating illegally in the Apamprama Forest.

The NDC in the past few days has called on the Attorney-General to resign, a position the AG has dismissed as unfounded.

According to the NDC, there is enough evidence in the report presented to the Chief of Staff in March 2021 to make prosecutions, contrary to the advice provided the government by A-G.

The party has described the advice as a mere cover-up to shield cronies of the NPP from facing prosecution despite the glaring evidence of indulging in galamsey.
