Opoku Ware Senior High School (OWASS) has defeated their archrivals, Prempeh College, to book a place at the grand finale of the 2023 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ).

The ‘Santasi Boys’ nicknamed Akatakyie, defeated the ‘Sofoline Boys’ known as ‘Amanfoɔ‘ along with Pope John Minor Seminary SHS in the second semi-finale of the contest.

After amassing 36 points each, both Pope John and Prempeh College were denied a slot in the grand finale with OWASS’s 38 points, denying Amanfoɔ the opportunity to make their third consecutive grand finale.

Prempeh College defeated the most successful school in the competition, Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School, Legon, (PRESEC) to win their fifth trophy in the 2021 edition.

The two schools met again in 2022, this time around, the PRESECANs defeating Prempeh College for their seventh laurel in the tournament, making them the most successful school in the competition.

After winning their only trophy 20 years ago, and appearing in their recent grand finale in 2021, the Akatakyie are hoping to lift their second trophy when they meet Achimota School a.k.a. ‘Motown’ –who have already secured a slot, –awaiting the final school from the last semi-final between PRESEC, Keta Senior High School from the Volta region and the Mfantsipim School from the Central region.

The first semi-finale which saw Achimota School through featured two all-girls school; Wesley Girls’ SHS and St. Louis SHS, from the Central and Ashanti regions respectively, falling behind Motown, the only mixed gender school to have ever won the contest and making this year’s semi-final.
