The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has postponed indefinitely all Matchday 20 games of the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League.
The decision was taken following the violence and resultant fatality in the Nsoatreman-Asante Kotoko game on Sunday.
According to a statement from the GFA, the decision is “aimed at creating space for the GFA to engage with relevant stakeholders and discuss the ramifications of the violence”.
It noted that the postponement will allow the Association to assess the situation, consult with stakeholders and develop strategies to prevent similar incidents in future.
The violence during Sunday’s game led to the dismissal of three players – Justice Blay and Mohammed Camara of Asante Kotoko and Stephe Diyou of Nsoatreman FC.
It was suspended for minutes but the home side scored a few minutes later to secure a 1-0 win over the visitors.
An ardent fan of the Porcupine Warriors, Francis Yaw Frimpong, popularly known as Nana Pooley, was stabbed to death right after the game near the entrance to the Prof Amoah Koramansah II Park.
“The GFA has been working to improve the overall football experience in Ghana and is keen to ensure that this incident is dealt with swiftly and decisively to send the signal that such acts have no place in Ghana Football,” the statement on Monday concluded.
