The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has apologised to the teeming supporters of the senior national men’s soccer team, the Black Stars, for the disappointment that characterised the team’s campaign at the Africa Cup of Nations in La Côte d’Ivoire.

Ghana exited the group stage without winning any game, losing 1-2 to Cape Verde and drawing 2-2 with Egypt and Mozambique in Group B.

The sport’s governing body in the country has conceded the “disappointment and frustration” such results can bring a passionate football-loving nation.

“Our team’s performance fell short of the high expectations we all share, and we take full responsibility for the disappointment,” tha GFA said in a statement issued on Tuesday, January 30.

The statement was issued after an Executive Council meeting with all chairman of the regional football associations (RFAs) in attendance.

The Council last week took a decision to terminate the contract of Black Stars head coach Chris Hughton and, consequently, dissolve the entire Technical Team following the team’s exit from the competition.

The decision came after Cameroon defeated The Gambia 3-2 in the final Group C game.

One of the fallouts from Tuesday’s meeting is an assurance that “requisite steps are being taken to address the issues at hand, and a thorough review of the team’s strategies, training, compensation, and overall structure is underway”.

The Association further gave an assurance of restoring the “pride and success we all desire for the Ghana Black Stars”.
