The Ghana Electrical Contractors Association (GECA) has applauded the recommendation by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Ghana’s Parliament for the prosecution of previous leadership of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) over misappropriation and mismanagement.

It came to light during a PAC sitting on Tuesday, October 28, when ranking member Samuel Atta-Mills revealed that, according to the Auditor- General’s report, ECG exceeded expenditure on thirteen budget line items without approval from the company’s board.

The report revealed that while the ECG budgeted GHC2.8 million, GHC4.2 million, GHC40 million, and GHC3.1 million for staff fuel, communication, consultancy, and stakeholders’ expenses respectively, the actual spending reached GHC3.6 million, GHC7.9 million, GHC58.6 million, and GHC49 million without board approval.

PAC has directed that the staff of the ECG culpable for the over GHC180 million in unapproved budget overruns in 2023 face prosecution by the Attorney-General.

GECA in a press statement issued on Wednesday 29th October, 2025 expressed deep concern over the worrying revelations of unapproved procurement practices and excessive spending that have left ECG financially strained and operationally compromised at the recent sitting of the Public Accounts Committee.

“It is particularly disheartening to note that ECG owes contractors for work duly completed during the said period, while the company continues to lack the essential materials required to complete critical projects aimed at expanding access and improving network efficiency” the statement partly read.

According to GECA , this situation has not only stalled progress in Ghana’s energy infrastructure but has also placed undue hardship on contractors and professionals who have upheld their obligations in good faith.

“GECA fully supports the committee’s recommendation that the Attorney General prosecute those responsible for this gross mismanagement. Accountability is essential to restoring public trust, safeguarding contractor livelihoods, and ensuring that ECG can fulfill its mandate to deliver reliable and efficient electricity services” the release stated.

The Ghana Electrical Contractors Association further calls on all relevant authorities to act promptly and decisively to ensure that justice is duly served whilst assuring all stakeholders of GECA’s commitment to high standards, electrical safety and the integrity of Ghana’s electrical industry.
