Akwasi Addai Odike, founder and leader of the United Progressive Party (UPP) has asserted Ghanaian leaders do not think.

His reason, he notes, is due to how Ghana’s constitution is structured.

“The architectural structure of our constitution doesn’t make our leaders think,” he told Captain Smart Wednesday, February 22, 2023.

According to the politician cum businessman, the system of government being practiced in Ghana is deficient in bettering the lives of the people.

The Executive, he says is the only Arm that weilds all the power making the others toothless. He said as long as the appointment of the leadership of the Judiciary lies in the powers of the Executive, there is no way their independence would be guaranteed.

“The Judiciary doesn’t have the independence it needs because judges promotion and appointment are all done by the Executive,” he stated, adding that “the MPs are working under duress. Sometimes they approve some decisions based on what the party says. [Certain policies] are against their will but parties force them to accept.”

Buttressing further his assertion, he said the recent comments by the former Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo, about her being ungagged because she is no more a government appointee affirms the problematic nature of the country’s constitution and how that prevents leadership from reasoning.

According to him, Madam Akuffo’s admission that all governments under the Fourth Republic have been a disappointment further attests his assertion of how flawed the constitution is.

Mr. Odike opined the Western world are still behind Ghana’s democracy, manipulating things in their favour.
