Ghana’s economic activity expanded by 7.5 percent in January 2026 compared to the same time last year, according to the latest Monthly Indicator of Economic Growth (MIEG) data from the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS).

GSS says the growth is steady, driven mainly by services, while industry and agriculture show changing momentum.

The economic growth recorded is at a slower pace than the 8.2% recorded in January 2025.

Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu, Government Statistician said Agriculture grew by 4.5% in January 2026 down from 9.3% in 2025, Industry by 7.2% compared to 9.7% in January 2025 and Services expanded by 9.6% up from 7.7% last year, indicating that the Services sector is experiencing the fastest expansion in economic activity.

GSS noted that the growth in Agriculture suggests slower momentum mainly reflecting seasonal patterns in crop and livestock.

GSS attributed the slowdown in Industry to reduced activity in oil and gas within mining and quarrying.

The growth in Services, according to GSS was driven by education and information and communication activities.

Services contributed 54.3% of total growth, Industry 29.0%, and Agriculture 14.0%.

Given that the Services sector has the largest share of GDP, , Dr Alhassan Iddrisu indicated that the performance of the sector highlights a shift toward a more service-led economy.

The Government Statistician said stable growth requires focus; strengthen industry, support agriculture productivity, and leverage services expansion to sustain economic progress in 2026.
