The Commonwealth Observer Group at the just ended elections in Ghana has lauded stakeholders of the exercise for exhibiting the true tenets of democracy in the conduct of the polls.
The Group says what its members observed since their arrival in Ghana is a demonstration and affirmation of Ghana being a beacon of democracy in the region and the globe as a whole.
Presenting its observations to the media in Accra Thursday, December 12, 2024, Eric Mokgweetsi Keabetswe Masisi, Head of the Group, disclosed that the elections were transparent and decisive.
According to him, the Group, after analysing its mission in Ghana applauded the exercise due to its fair nature. He explained that the elections fulfilled the criteria of the Commonwealth in determining what a democratic poll is.
“In the debriefing we had, we went through the motions of what we came to do and what we observed. But particularly significant was to acknowledge and applaud the conduct of the elections in Ghana in 2024. Because in terms of the criteria established, they qualified as free, fair, transparent and decisive,” he stated.
The Group went ahead to commend the Ghana Police Service for exhibiting professionalism and high standards in the conduct of the polls.
Mr. Keabetswe Masisi remarked that the role of the police cannot be over-emphasised in the conduct of the election, indicating that the manner with which the Service maintained decorum in the country is novel.
“The police in Ghana played an extremely important role of being the referee of law and order, the keeper of the peace without the use of force, and that is novel,” he extolled.
