The Ghana Police Service has been highly commended by the Commonwealth Observer Group at the just ended elections in Ghana.

The Group, which described the Saturday, December 07, 2024, polls as “free, fair, transparent and decisive”, indicated in its report that the feat couldn’t have been attained without the work of the police.

Presenting its observations to the media in Accra Thursday, December 12, 2024, Head of the Observer Group, Eric Mokgweetsi Keabetswe Masisi, stated that the Ghana Police Service deserve commendation for exhibiting professionalism and high standards in the conduct of the polls.

He pointed out that the role of the police cannot be over-emphasised in the conduct of the election, indicating that the manner with which the Service maintained decorum in the country is novel.

“The police in Ghana played an extremely important role of being the referee of law and order, the keeper of the peace without the use of force, and that is novel,” he stated.

Mr. Keabetswe Masisi further indicated that members of the Group toured 8 regions during the elections and observed that the Police “were found to be informed, alert, on task, friendly, firm and clearly in charge of the maintenance of the peace.”

He expressed appreciation to the peace enforcement agency for providing them with security throughout their stay in Ghana as well and also protecting “all Ghanaians for the exhibition of the standard ideals of the Commonwealth with respect to those attributes that define the democratic conduct of elections.”

The Head of the Group further commended the police for its stewardship, objectivity “and keeping the promise you made to us with your smiling faces the first time we met.”
