Government has hinted of a suit against Media General, owners of Onua TV/FM and Captain Smart, host of the station’s morning show for comments made by the broadcaster against the President.

On Monday October 17, 2022, Mr Smart had alleged the President was actively involved in the illegal mining menace which a release from the Information ministry indicate the presidency is not taking the matter lightly.

The release has absolved the President from the act as alleged by Captain Smart.

According to the release, government was going to refer the Maakye host to the National Media Commission to review and adjudicate the comments he made Monday.

It has also added that the presidency aside from referring the matter to the National Media Commission “is without prejudice to government’s right to seek further legal action against Mr. Smart, Onua TV and Media General.”

Captain Smart had said until the president takes the bold step to clampdown on illegal mining by sanctioning persons in his party involved in the act, he is as good as an active illegal miner himself.

Meanwhile, the release signed by Deputy Information Minister, Fatimatu Abubakar Monday said “government is concerned about the spread of disinformation and misinformation, clothed under the pretext of journalistic discretion and free expression.”
