A 2-1 win over unbeaten Asante Kotoko on Wednesday, October 30 became the first for Legon Cities in the Ghana Premier League this season.
The game was a Week 6 fixture rescheduled as a result of Asante Kotoko’s participation in the 2024 Capital City Africa Cup in Washington DC.
The only remaining outstanding match in the eight-week-old 2024/25 season, the game at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium became crucial for the home side.
They had gone seven matches without a win and were languishing bottom of the league with two points from two draws this season.
But Paa Kwesi Fabian’s side served notice of picking the win midweek from off his former club as they drew first blood in the 22nd minute through Albert Yeboah.
The Porcupine Warriors pushed for the equalizer but goalkeeper Kwame Aziz stood between their attack and his goalposts.
Legon Cities, therefore, went into the break with their heads in front.
But the Reds restored parity a few minutes after recess through in-form Albert Amoah. He scored from the spot.
With the game heading to a draw, Abdul Rahim Yaya emerged from nowhere to slam home the winner.
He scored in injury time, inflicting the first defeat on Asante Kotoko.
The vital win lifts Paa Kwesi Fabian’s side from bottom of the log, consigning Dreams FC there. They now have five points.
Their next game will be at home against Wenchi-based Young Apostles.
Asante Kotoko will return to the Obuasi Len Clay Stadium to welcome Heart of Lions in one of the Week 9 games scheduled for the weekend.
