The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, held a high-level consultative meeting with a former Minister for Education under the late ex President Rawlings’ administration, Dr. Christine Amoako-Nuamah.
This is part of ongoing efforts to advance Ghana’s higher education sector under the reset agenda of President John Dramani Mahama.
The engagement forms part of strategic consultations initiated by the Minister, following a directive from President Mahama, to establish a committee that will oversee the creation of new public universities and drive the expansion of access to quality tertiary education across the country.
During the meeting, Mr Iddrisu sought the valuable insights and experience of Dr. Amoako-Nuamah, whose tenure in office was marked by significant contributions to Ghana’s educational development. The discussions focused on policy direction, institutional growth, and sustainable frameworks to support the envisioned expansion.
A key highlight of the meeting was the discussion on the development of Kenyasi No. 2 as an approved second campus of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT).
The proposed campus is expected to serve as a hub for specialized programmes in mining-related disciplines, agribusiness, and entrepreneurship aligning with Ghana’s industrial and economic transformation goals.
Minister Iddrisu emphasized that the initiative is part of a broader vision to decentralize higher education, promote innovation, and equip the youth with relevant skills for national development.
The meeting underscores government’s commitment to inclusive and forward looking education reforms, leveraging experience, expertise, and strategic partnerships to build a resilient and globally competitive tertiary education system.
