A second-half penalty by Mawuli Wayo gave Accra Hearts of Oak all the three maximum points as they opened Matchday 19 of the Ghana Premier League against title contenders Heart of Lions.
The University of Ghana Sports Stadium hosted the game on Friday, January 31.
The visitors were seeking to topple Asante Kotoko from the top of the table with a win while the hosts needed to consolidate their hopes of also winning the title.
After a goalless first half, Stephen Appiah Asare was brought down in the penalty area by the Lions defence, resulting in referee Daniel Nii Laryea pointing to the spot.
Wayo stepped up to convert from the spot in 50th minute, giving his side the needed fillip in the game.
However, the goal became the eventual winner as the Phobians walked away with the three points.
They now go just behind their opponents on the same points – 33 – on the standings.
Lions remain third on the log with a superior head-to-head against Hearts as they won the first leg 2-0 at Sogakope last year.
The Phobians’ next game will be at the Nana Fosua Gyeabour Park against Bechem United.
Heart of Lions will also return home to await struggling Dreams FC.
