Member of Parliament for Ayawaso Central, Henry Quartey, has retained his candidature after Saturday, January  27, 2024 parliamentary primaries of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

His victory comes after a former Member of Parliament in the constituency and Greater Accra regional Minister under the erstwhile John Kufuor administration, Sheik I.C. Quaye had indicated that the MP did not deserve another chance since he was not according party elders the needed respect in the constituency.

After the contest, Henry Quartey obtained 594 votes against his only contender, Moses Abor who managed some 326 of the votes cast.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Education and Member of Parliament for Abuakwa North in the Eastern region, Gifty Twum Ampofo also lost her candidature after today’s polls.

The Minister, garnered 202 votes against Nana Ampaw Addo-Frempong’s 222 with Boakye Danquah Palgrave, Nana Kwadwo Mamfe and Kofi Obeng Mensah following respectively with 76 and 4 each.

Five Hundred and Nine (509) delegates voted in the constituency with one rejected ballot leaving Five Hundred and Eight (508) as the valid votes cast.

In a related development, COP Alex Mensah also trailed behind Ralph Poku-Adusei in the Bekwai constituency. The former police officer amassed 245 out of the 938 valid votes cast against the Mr. Opoku who obtained 662 of the votes.

Two ballots were rejected. Mr. Poku Adusei steps in the shoes of the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei Owusu who is the current Member of Parliament in the area but chose not to run next year.
