The Minister of Interior, Henry Quartey, has threatened a legal action against the Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), if he doesn’t retract an allegation he has made against him.
Mr. Gbande says the Minister, who is also the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso Central, is making plans to rig the upcoming December elections.
According to Mr. Gbande, Henry Quartey is planning the rigging with the Deputy Inspector General of Police, and the Director of the National Intelligence Bureau.
He says the Interior Minister has been having secret meetings with the two top security officers to plan how to manipulate the results of the upcoming December elections.
The claims, are what the Minister has described as “baseless” and “unfortunate,” and designed to undermine public confidence in the government.
Mr. Quartey wants the NDC Deputy Secretary to retract the comments and warned of a legal action if he maintains the position.
“I think this statement is very unfortunate coming from a Deputy General Secretary of a big political party like the NDC. He is making a very wild allegation. He is inciting the public.
“We have to get him to retract. If he doesn’t do so, then I will put legal redress to show beyond all reasonable doubts that the Interior Minister, National Intelligence Bureau and the Deputy IGP is planning to rig elections. This cannot continue,” the Ayawaso Central lawmaker indicated.
He, however, reassured the public of the government’s resolve to ensure the elections take place peacefully and transfer power smoothly, should the New Patriotic Party lose.
“If people think that they want us to go, we will hand over peacefully but so long as we live and we remain in power and the security apparatus and architecture of this country remains, nobody will misbehave in this country. If they do, we will let the law deal with them,” he said.
