A former Head of the Political Science department at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr Richard Baah Amoako, is asking the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to be careful about the resignation of Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen.

He has said that the former Trade and Industry minister’s resignation can greatly affect the party in the 2024 polls if leadership of the party, take lightly, the parting away of their stalwart.

The political scientist who is also a staunch member of the NPP noted the insults being hailed on Mr. Kyerematen will not inure to the benefit of the NPP since he still remains, despite his resignation, an important figure in the party.

According to him, Alan Kyerematen can pull surprises with the traditional Ashantis since the tendency of them voting for him is very high.

He lauded Alan’s leadership prowess, saying he has what it takes to lead if elected to become president.

Dr. Baah Amoako also pointed out the fact that Alan Kyerematen’s popularity can outshine the Ashantis love for the NPP if the leadership does not strategise ahead of the December 7, 2024 polls.

“I believe that God has given Alan talents that he can offer his service to the people of Ghana at the highest level of executive authority.

“The Ashanti region has been the backbone of our party. It is the stronghold of our party. So it’s going to be important for the NPP as a party getting into the general election. As an independent candidate, his wish would be that the Ashanti region will put their weight behind him,” he said.

He also cautioned on the independent candidate wooing supporters from the opposition NDC to side too.

Former Trade and Industry minister, Alan John Kyerematen resigned from the NPP on September 25 after disclosing that his continuous stay in the party would cause further disintegration.

He said a special delegates’ conference held on August 25 to prune the 10 presidential candidate aspirants was skewed in favour of one candidate, whereas, his agents were also harassed in the process, without any attempt by the party leadership to proffer sanctions to persons who perpetrated such acts.

Prior to announcing his resignation from the party, which is the second after an initial one in 2008, Mr. Kyerematen pulled out of the November 4, primary scheduled to finalise on the final five candidates for the party’s flag bearer for 2024.
