The Health Services Workers Union has expressed sadness over a 4 billion cedis pensions fund government owes the Social Security and National Insurance Trust.

The Union says the arrears will affect the returns of retirees by close of this year.

At a news conference Tuesday, September 6, 2022, the Union expressed dismay over president Akufo-Addo’s promise to get some top-up benefit for those who retired few years ago but has not not been implemented.

General Secretary of the Health Services Workers Union, Franklin Owusu Ansah spoke at the news conference.

“We want to bring to the attention of the general public that we have challenges with our pensions. The president of the Republic of Ghana promised workers that they were going to do a top up for 2020 retirees, up to today, we have not seen anything in that light.

“Government is in arrears for about 8 months for tier two contributions. We don’t want to talk about SSNIT because the Auditor General’s report came out with how much government owes over 4 billion to SSNIT.

“Please if our pensions continue this way, we are afraid tomorrow a government may come and say the three-tier pension system is not working and we want to collapse it,” he expressed.
