Renowned Ghanaian visual artist, Ibrahim Mahama, has said his decision to pursue action over an alleged assault by police officers is aimed at securing justice rather than financial compensation.
His comments come after a meeting with the Police Management Board (POMAB) on Thursday, March 26, 2026, as part of ongoing investigation into claims of assault involving officers from the Inspector General of Police’s Special Task Force, popularly known for operating the “Black Maria.”
Speaking to the media after the engagement, Mahama stressed that the focus his pursuit is to ensure accountability and transparency in addressing the incident.
“No, we are not looking for compensation. There is no way we are looking for money. Obviously, I don’t need that. It’s not about that. It’s more just about justice,” he stated.
He explained that his primary concern is for the full facts surrounding the incident to be established and for those found culpable to be held responsible.
“We just want to make sure people understand what transpired that day. Because we are all in the country, we are in a democracy. We want to understand what is happening and see how we can solve it,” he added.
Mahama further underscored that seeking justice in such cases is critical to reinforcing public trust in state institutions, particularly in ensuring that citizens feel protected and their grievances taken seriously.
“So that when other people are elsewhere, and things like this happen, at least they are assured that in the country they live in, their matter will be taken seriously and there will be some kind of justice,” he said.
