President of the Republic of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has expressed confidence in the West African sub-region reintegrating as one body.

His comments stem from the decision by Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger to form a separate confederation following recent developments which the three nations did not find favourable for their respective countries.

“We have noted the sovereign decisions of not only Mali, but Burkina Faso and Niger to form a separate confederation,” he said.

Despite the decision by the three nations, President Mahama has noted there are many things that all the nations within the sub-region share together, which should be the driving force to ensure they don’t become disintegrated.

At a media briefing during a visit by the Malian Prime Minister, General Abdoulaye Maïga, at the Flagstaff House Thursday, January 16, 2025, he indicated that “God put us together in this sub-region for a purpose so we continue to inter-marry, trade, have relationships that go beyond individual countries and so we must recognise those and despite the temporary setbacks that we are facing, we must continue to keep our relationships strong.”

John Mahama expressed optimism over the success of the coming together of the nations under the sub-region to foster unity. “I believe that eventually, we’ll be able to integrate ourselves again as one body,” he stated.

The Malian PM, Maiga, on his part said “we are convinced that our two leaders have the way to enforce the cooperation and economic and security. We salute H.E. John Dramani Mahama for ensuring that we are combating for Pan Africanism with H.E. President of the Republic of Mali.”
