In a bid to enhance responsible and sustainable mining practices, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Flagbearer of the NPP, has unveiled plans to establish common-user processing facilities across various mining districts if he assumes the presidency.

Speaking at the 3rd Annual Transformational Dialogue on Small Scale Mining organized by the University of Energy and Natural Resources in Sunyani on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, Dr. Bawumia underscored the imperative of ensuring that mining activities yield benefits for the entire nation.

“I will set up common-user processing facilities to streamline mining operations in different districts nationwide,” Dr. Bawumia affirmed, outlining his vision for bolstering efficient and eco-friendly processing options for miners.

Moreover, he outlined a strategy to deploy Community Environmental Protection Assistants, collaborating with the Minerals Commission/Environmental Protection Agency, alongside River Wardens and local authorities, to bolster environmental safeguards.

Dr. Bawumia highlighted the pivotal role of these facilities in curbing illegal mining activities, commonly referred to as “galamsey,” positing that legal and sustainable processing alternatives could diminish or eradicate such practices.

Emphasizing the collective benefits of mining to the nation, Dr. Bawumia advocated for a paradigm shift towards practices that prioritize environmental preservation and community welfare over the interests of a select few.
