Johnson Asiedu Nketia, National Chairman of the opposition NDC, has said Tuesday’s demonstration against the Electoral Commission (EC) was the beginning of what the party intends to do should the EC refuses to heed to its calls.
He says the party restricted the protest to the regional capitals for the starts, adding that the next move would be extended to the district and constituency offices if the EC fails to honour its demands.
The party’s demonstration against the EC took place at all 16 regional capitals across the country Tuesday, September 17, 2024.
The protest followed a directive by the NDC leadership to carry out this protest in all the regional offices to present a petition to the Commission to register its displeasure over what it describes as a bloated register.
Speaking to participants at the Nkrumah interchange, popularly known as ‘Circle’, in Accra, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the party Chairman, noted that the demands being made by members of the party is not a favour they are asking from the government or EC but rather a demand for their rights.
“We are not asking for a favour from Electoral Commission or Nana Akufo-Addo or Bawumia. We are demanding our right to free and fair elections. So we are warning them, today is only the beginning, if they think that after the demonstration, everybody will go to sleep, they are joking. Today is just the beginning.
“That is why we are restricting these demonstrations to regional offices. The next demonstration will go to district and constituency offices of the Electoral Commission and we will fight and fight and fight till the rating is down,” he stated.
Asiedu Nketia added that the demonstration was a fight being fought for the future generation of the country.
“We must not let our future generations down. It is our time to fight. What we are doing is to prevent war in this country. If you want to prevent war, you fight to remove everything that has the tendency to generate into war.
“There is no sitting on the fence. If you sit on the fence today and allow conflict to mature into war, you will be conscripted into the army to fight and die. So, instead of waiting for war to break, for you to be conscripted to go and fight and die, fight now against the elements that are generating the conflict,” he told the crowd.
