John Dramani Mahama, the flag bearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has advised Ghanaian youth to instill financial discipline and inculcate the habit of bettering their lives with the little revenue they make.

The advice comes on the back of the NDC’s quest to scrap the tax on bet winnings if it wins the December elections.

Speaking to constituents in the Bono East region as part of his campaign tour, the flag bearer of the NDC reaffirmed his party’s commitment to abolishing the controversial tax if elected.

The former President, however, counseled the youth that proceeds from bet winnings should not be expensed haphazardly, but used to make something meaningful to upgrade their lives.

“We will remove the betting tax. For those who engage in betting, when you win, the government will no longer take a tax from your winnings,” he said.

However, he cautioned, “If you win, spend your money wisely. Don’t waste it on unnecessary things—use it to improve your life in a meaningful way,” he told party supporters at Nkwabeng in the Nkoranza South constituency Saturday, September 08, 2024.

He also reminded the gathering that his administration is still keen on abolishing the nuisance electronic transaction levy (E-levy) which has seen criticisms since its introduction.

He was confident scraping that tax will bring some relief to workers in the mobile money industry and boost the sector.

“We will remove the E-Levy, so when you use your mobile money to make purchases, you won’t be charged that tax anymore,” he declared.

The scraping of the two taxes will bring relief to mobile money merchants and those in the betting business since they can have access to their full winnings without any deductions.
