An Albert Amoah first-half strike gave Asante Kotoko a vital away win over Karela United on Sunday, September 8.
It was the start of a new season for both sides as the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League began in full swing.
Karela United had been a thorn in the flesh of the Porcupine Warriors, eliminating the Kumasi giants from the MTN FA Cup last season.
With the new season beckoning and Asante Kotoko parading a lot of new players, following the wholesale transfer of last season’s players, the stage was set for a showdown.
The Naa Sheriga Sports Center became the venue of attraction.
A powerful left-foot strike by Amoah with 10 minutes to end the first half gave the visitors the needed booster.
That goal eventually became the winner as no other player was able to record his name on the scoresheet.
With the 3 points in the bag for Asante Kotoko, they brim with confidence going into their rescheduled game against Nsoatreman FC, who will be taking on Algeria’s CS Constantine in the CAF Confederation Cup.
Karela United will, however, have to fight for all the points as they travel to Berekum to face Berekum Chelsea in their next league game.
In the other games, Hearts of Oak were stunned by debutants Basake Holy Stars at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Dreams FC and champions FC Samartex also played a goalless game at the same venue a day earlier.
