Dr. Gideon Boako, spokesperson for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flag bearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), has said the Anti-galamsey protest organised by Democracy Hub was politically motivated.

According to him, the plethora of demonstration coming up with few months to the elections lack authenticity and are not intended on genuine causes.

The New Patriotic Party’s Parliamentary Candidate for Tano North made the comments in connection with the three-day protest organised by Democracy Hub for the government to address illegal mining and governance issues where 53 of the participants were arrested and detained.

In an interview on Accra-based Peace FM Friday, September 27, 2024, Dr. Boako said the sincerity of the protests are questionable considering the proximity to the December polls.

He asserts such protests are meant to divert public opinion rather than advocating for change.

He intimated that genuine protests have clear purpose aimed at addressing pressing national issues to effect change, adding that the government was open to dialogue with citizens who have issues.

Boako cautioned against protests that could potentially disrupt the upcoming December elections urging citizens with concerns to opt for constructive dialogue instead of demonstrating.

“Anyone leading a protest and believes that if any human being dies is nothing, it means their demonstration was more political than conservationists. So I believe two or three months to election, there is no genuine demonstration. It is a political protest, not genuine. They used galamsey as a decoy,” he stated.
