As the world commemorates the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, the 2024 running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), has called on all stakeholders to demonstrate sincere and determined efforts to end impunity for crimes against Ghanaian journalists.

In a statement on his Facebook page on Monday, November 2, 2026, he expressed worry that Ghana is fast sliding down the slope of impunity for crimes against journalists and other media practitioners.

Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh

“Journalists must be able to ask difficult questions and report on matters of public interest without fear of violence or intimidation.

“On this International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, I stand with media professionals in Ghana and across the world who face threats because of their work.

“Even when we disagree strongly with a report, our response must not place a journalist’s safety at risk. We can challenge inaccuracies, demand corrections and defend our reputations while respecting that fundamental principle.

“Attacks against journalists must be investigated thoroughly, those responsible held accountable, and victims and their families given access to justice.

“Those of us in political and public life must uphold this standard, including when the scrutiny concerns us or our own parties.

“Journalists’ safety must never depend on whom their reporting favours or offends.”
