The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has admonished teachers to be disciplined and not take advantage of their students.

He says discipline and integrity are key tenets in the educational sector and has advised teachers to prioritise while imparting knowledge to the next generation.

Mr. Iddrisu, who was speaking at the 2025 Ghana Teacher Prize ceremony in Ho on Sunday, October 5, 2025, urged these facilitators to uphold the values of the teaching profession, stressing that the future of Ghana lies in the moral strength and professional commitment of its people.

He referenced a call by the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) for teachers to behave and act as role models to their students, rather than taking advantage of them.

Mr. Iddrisu warned that any teacher found culpable of abusing the rights of students will face the full rigors of the law.

“I appreciate your admonition to our teachers not to abuse and take advantage of learners. That is unacceptable and that is punishable and that will be punished,” he stressed.

He reemphasised that “no teacher is above the law and therefore any teacher found operating below acceptable standards must face the ruthless and highest sanctions of your law.”

The Minister assured the Director-General of the GES that the state would support his efforts in punishing teachers who flout the profession’s code of ethics.

“You have the Republic backing you as Director-General to do so.”

The Minister’s admonition comes on the back of the dismissal of the Assistant Headmaster (Academic) of the KNUST Senior High School, Charles Akwasi Aidoo, by the Ghana Education Service following a viral video that captured him and a female student in a compromising position.

In a statement issued on Monday, September 29, 2025, the GES said its attention had been drawn to the video circulating on social media where it said it views the matter with “utmost seriousness” and has taken immediate steps in line with its commitment to safeguarding students.

“Mr Aidoo has already been removed from office, and prohibited from going to the school while thorough investigations are being carried out,” the statement, signed by GES Head of Public Relations, Daniel Fenyi, said.

GES assured parents, stakeholders and the public that due process would be followed.

“The appropriate disciplinary action will be taken in accordance with the code of conduct of the Ghana Education Service,” it added.

The service also said it’s dedicated to protecting the safety and well-being of students across the country.

“The GES remains committed to upholding the highest standards of professionalism, discipline, and child protection in all our schools. We strongly condemn any acts that compromise the safety, dignity, and well-being of students,” the statement said.
