Liverpool winger Lewis Koumas rescued a point for Wales in their international friendly against 2026 FIFA World Cup-bound Ghana on Tuesday, June 2.

Caleb Yirenkyi had given Ghana a 1-0 lead in the second half but Wales pushed hard as Koumas connected to a cross from the right side of attack to beat Benjamin Asare in post at the Cardiff City Stadium, earning the all-important draw.

The early stages of Tuesday’s game saw the Dragons press hard to pin the Black Stars in their own half.

They hit the woodwork a couple of times with goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi called upon to save the situation on a few occasions.

With all the chances in the first half, both nations failed to put the ball at the back of the net.

Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz then effected changes pulling Ati-Zigi, Thomas Partey, Prince Adu Kwabena and Abdul-Fatawu Issahaku off for Benjamin Asare, Kwasi Sibo, Brandon Thomas-Asante and Ernest Nuamah respectively.

After 15 minutes, the Portuguese gaffer rang the changes again this time pulling off Elisha Owusu and Kamaldeen Sulemana for Caleb Yirenkyi and Christopher Baah Bonsu.

The substitutes combined brilliantly to get the goal for Ghana.

It started with Number 10 man Thomas-Asante winning possession in midfield and laying the ball to Nuamah, whose run ended with a strike that was punched by the Welsh goalie only for Yirenkyi to pounce on for the opener.

This boon got the Black Stars on the front foot as more players were thrown in.

Unfortunately, the home side dashed expectations of the match ending in a win for the Africans as Koumas equalised with five minutes to go.

The match ended in a 1-1 draw, the third consecutive draw for the side this year.

Their next encounter will be on Saturday, June 6 against Romania while the Black Stars wrap-up preparations for the World Cup as they head to North America.
