The Metropolitan Chief Executive of Kumasi, Richard Kwasi Ofori-Agyemang Boadi, has said he is on course to make the metropolis a clean hub.
According to him, poor sanitation has, over the years, been the biggest bane and an obstacle to growth and development.
However, he indicates they made it a priority when he assumed office, and they are currently making headway.
The KMA boss, in an interview with our news team on Sunday, September 7, 2025, said they have secured technical assistance in collaboration with development partners to keep the city clean.
The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) in collaboration with Informal sector waste workers –Borla Taxi & Tricycle Association and JSO Waste Managers, organized a city-wide cleanup exercise today, September 7, 2025.
The exercise is part of preparations for the funeral of the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, scheduled for Monday, September 15,2025.
The cleanup exercise aims to ensure that the city of Kumasi is spotless to honour the late Asantehemaa and make it presentable for visitors who will be mourning with Asanteman.
The Mayor was seen physically desilting clogged gutters, demonstrating his commitment to the exercise.
Schools like KASS, Asanteman SHS,Bantama SDA SHS and others also contributed to the success of the cleanup exercise.
It is expected that the exercise contributes to maintaining the dignity and cleanliness of Kumasi during the funeral proceedings of the late Asantehemaa.
As part of the technical assistance, the KMA Boss, Agyemang Boadi, said KMA has obtained compactor trucks, thousands of containers, pilot recycling and composting plants, as well as the transfer of technical know-how and the management of source-separate waste.
“They come in various sizes, and we have marked about 200 places for piloting.”
In addition, he said KMA has mini recycling plants and composite plants which will cater for wet and dry waste.
“The waste products will go through recycling, so we have done a lot and achieved a lot. The results have been impressive,” he touted.
He appealed to volunteer groups, the Ashanti Youth and Kumasi Youth Associations, and all youth groups to actively take part in the exercise.
He called on the residents to ensure environmental cleanliness since the assembly is spending huge amount of money on sanitation.
The National President of Informal sector waste workers, Lydia Banfo, said they collect more than half of the waste generated in Accra .
She called on the authorities to integrate them into their scheme of things in fighting sanitation.
She touched on huge employment opportunities the Informal sector waste workers has created for some residents in Accra.
