Chocked drains caused by indiscriminate disposal of waste especially plastic largely account for perennial flooding at the Asafo market enclave in Kumasi.

The worrying situation had continue to pose threat to lives and properties especially during downpour.

To address this challenge, a cleanup and desilting exercise to get the clear the chocked gutters and ensure free flow of water has been organised.

Led by the Assemblyman for Asafo electoral area, Ernest Okai and supported by a private construction firm, Alhaji and Madina construction company and the environmental department of Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, the exercise did not focus on cleaning the environment but also sensitized residents on the need to practice good personal hygiene.

Described by many as a ‘visionary leader’, Mr Okai has launch a bi-monthly event to keep the Asafo area clean and serene.

“Clealiness as they say is next to Godliness, hence, my resolve to ensure our environment is kept clean.

“Again, recent flooding in the Asafo market has caused the destruction of properties. Checks revealed, the flood is a result of our choked drains. It was therefore imperative we take the initiative to bring relief to our people and avoid any preventable death. We will embark on this kind of exercise on regular basis to make Asafo the cleanest area”, Mr Okai noted.

Some residents commended the initiative and pledged to offer their support in terms of keeping their environment clean.
