Former Black Stars forward Charles Kweku Bismark Taylor Asampong, popularly known as Charles Taylor, has urged authorities to go and beg former Black Stars midfielder Michael Essien to coach the senior national men’s football team.

The team is currently without a coach and a 5-member committee tasked to get a new coach is racing behind time to get a suitable person for the job.

Reports are rife former coach Otto Addo has been contacted for a return to the job following a rejecti on of over 600 applications submitted by interested managers for the vacant role.

Speaking on Onua FM‘s Sports Center on Monday, February 19, Charles Taylor was concerned the Black Stars’ future is bleak due to a lot of happenings within the team.

The former Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko forward cited player selection as a major concern in the team.

But he said “for the Black Stars to do well, let’s go and beg [Michael] Essien to come and coach the Black Stars”.

He added that former captain Stephen Appiah and Laryea Kingston should be added to the Essien-led technical team.

“Imagine Essien on the touchline, coaching [Mohammed] Kudus, can he misbehave?” he quizzed.

He said the pedigree of those three former players has made them likeable to all Ghanaians and they will have the needed moral support to lead the Black Stars.

He rejected calls to have Otto Addo return as he said he has been seen before.

“Nothing will happen with Otto Addo. What did he do that makes him a good coach?” he questioned, saying the qualification to the 2022 World Cup should not even be a yardstick as many other coaches had done it before in better style.

The coaching job became vacant after the dismissal of Chris Hughton following the disappointing campaign of the Black Stars at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
