Kwesi Pratt Jnr., Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, has bemoaned President Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s serpentine approach to the issue of homosexuality.

At a joint press conference with US Vice President Kamala Harris during her three day visit to Ghana, President Akufo-Addo could not make a straight stance on Ghana’s position on LGBTQ+ when it came up in the discussion.

This has led to serious bashing from various circles in the country regarding his approach.

Commenting on the Bill before Parliament, President Akufo-Addo said “the bill is going through the Parliament. The Attorney General has found it necessary to speak to the committee (the constitutional and legal committee of parliament) about it regarding the constitutionality . . . of several of its provisions. The parliament is dealing with it. At the end of the process, I will come in.”

This follows his previous comment on the issue in 2021 when he said LGBTQ will not happen under his presidency after he had said in a BBC interview that “it is bound to happen.”

Mr. Pratt Jnr. is surprised the President would speak on one issue on three different ocassions taking three different positions.

“The President has shared his thought on three ocassions, when you listen to the first one it is different from the second one, when you listen to the third one it is different from the first one, one person you have three different thoughts, why? It is a worry, as President when you talk you need to be firm and plain so we all know your stance,“ Kwesi Pratt Jnr noted.

He told Akufo-Addo that, “as a President, you have to be firm on your position but for this one, you can’t know where he stands when he talks.”

”What worries me is the inconsistencies. If you won’t state your position just keep quiet,” he said on Accra-based Peace FM.
