The Binduri chapter of the Mamprugu Youth Association (MAYA) has called on the Inspector-General of Police, the Chief of Defence staff, the Upper East Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice to intervene in the Binduri security situation that is taking more lives and properties for the past six years.
MAYA has pledged its support to lawful security operations and commitment to peace. Its leadership said sustainable peace cannot be built where justice, fairness and respect for human life are compromised.
Since the conflict in Bawku was extended to Binduri in 2021, houses have been burnt, families displaced, and communities like Gumyoko have been deserted due to fear of attacks.
The group, in their press conference, disagreed with the Ghana Police Service’s press statement on the death of Issaka Shaban Alias “Culture” who according to the police, died from multiple gunshot wounds and that an AK-47 and ammunition were retrieved from the suspect.
“Contrary to this account, eyewitnesses have indicated that Mr. Shaban was picked up at dawn on 3rd September, 2026 at his residence, and moved to the Binduri Primary school area. Shot in the legs by the military operations team and taken away together with three other persons who are now said to be in police custody”, Peter Adams, spokesperson for MAYA said.
MAYA is therefore demanding an immediate independent and transparent investigation into the killing of Mr. Isaka Shaban including forensic and ballistic reports, investigation into allegations of bias by military personnel deployed at Bazua against Mamprusi communities, professional and neutral conduct by all security agencies in Bawku and Binduri and strict adherence by all security personnel to constitutional provisions on human rights including Article 12, Article 15 and Article 19 of the 1992 Constitution.
