Police have arrested a suspect over the alleged assault on a midwife at the Tema Community 22 Polyclinic, after a viral video of the incident circulated on social media.
The arrest was confirmed by the Greater Accra Regional Health Directorate in a statement on June 5, 2026 which strongly condemned the assault on the midwife at Tema Community 22 Polyclinic.
In a statement issued on June 5, 2026, the Directorate said the incident occurred on Tuesday, June 2, when the midwife was allegedly attacked by a relative of a patient while enforcing the facility’s visiting hours policy.
According to the statement, the suspect is expected to be arraigned before court on Monday, June 8, 2026.
The Directorate described the incident as an unacceptable attack on a healthcare worker carrying out her professional duties.
According to the Directorate, the assault, which was captured in a video currently circulating on social media, was unprovoked and has raised serious concerns about the safety of healthcare workers within health facilities.
The Regional Health Directorate expressed solidarity with the affected midwife and all health workers across the region, emphasizing that healthcare professionals deserve to work in an environment free from fear, intimidation and physical harm.
“We stand firmly behind the affected midwife and every member of staff across our facilities. They come to work to serve the public, and they must be able to do so without fear of physical harm,” the statement noted.
The Directorate commended the Ghana Police Service for its swift intervention, which helped restore calm at the facility.
The Health Directorate reiterated that violence against healthcare workers will not be tolerated under any circumstances and urged members of the public to utilize established complaint and grievance procedures when dissatisfied with services.
It noted that under directives from the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, all grievances should be channelled through the Client Service Desk available in every Ghana Health Service facility, where concerns can be addressed and escalated appropriately when necessary.
“Assault is not a channel for redress, and it will not be treated as one,” the statement stressed.
The Directorate reaffirmed its commitment to delivering quality healthcare services to residents of the Greater Accra Region and appealed to patients and their relatives to treat healthcare workers with respect while using appropriate channels to address concerns.
The statement was signed by Dr. Robert Amesiya, Regional Director of Health Service for the Greater Accra Region.
