The Minority in Parliament has demanded an immediate dismissal of the Director-General and Board Chairman of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment NaCCA over the Gender Identity content in the Physical Education Senior High School teacher manual.
The Minority said the leadership of NaCCA failed in its oversight responsibility as government attempts to introduce LGBT activities into the SHS curriculum.
Addressing journalists on Thursday, the Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah called for a withdrawal of all teaching and learning materials containing such contents.
“We on the side of the Minority demand the immediate withdrawal of teaching and learning materials containing LGBTQ related content including redefined concept of sex, sexuality, sexual orientation, sexual rights and gender identity from all schools.
“We also demand the dismissal of the Director-General of NaCCA and the Chairperson of NaCCA board for failure of oversight and breach of public trust. We say so because NaCCA is now telling us, assuming without admitting that the document was developed by the NPP government in 2024. If you don’t believe in it, why then do you go ahead to go and even print them in 2025?” Ekow Assafuah noted.
The Minority is also demanding a transparent and inclusive review of all affected teaching and learning materials involving parliament, religious bodies, traditional authorities, parents, civil society organisations, education experts and teacher unions.
The Caucus wants a comprehensive parliamentary inquiry to be instituted by the appropriate committee of the House and look into the development, approval, funding and circulation of the curriculum including the role of external partners.
The Minority further called on the entire Christian community and the Muslim clerics to carefully assess the Physical Education Teacher Manual and determine whether its content aligns with Christian and Muslim teachings.
“I once again use this opportunity and on behalf of my colleagues call on the Catholic Bishop Conference, the Christian Council of Ghana, the Methodist Conference, the Presbyterian Conference, the Muslim Conference to examine the teacher manual carefully and determine whether its content is in consonance with the teachings of Christ and for the Muslims to also assess whether the content in the teacher manual are also in consonance with the teachings of Prophet Mohammed,” the Old Tafo MP stressed.
